 General Registration Information for All Programs

  • Registration is required for all Adult, Young Adult, Children, and Family programs and may be done either in person or by telephone at (845) 477-8377 Ext. 101 (unless in-person registration is required where noted).
  • When noted, all children must be accompanied by an adult.
  • Seating is limited; early registration is highly recommended.
  • For additional information about a particular program, please call the individual staff member as noted.
  • Patrons of all abilities are welcome to register for Library programs. If you are in need of assistance for a particular program, we request that you bring along a caretaker to assist you. Due to the time constraints for our programs, the Programmer is unable to offer individualized attention; thus, having a caretaker accompany you will be most helpful to you, as well as to the Programmer.
 
 
Adult Game Club

1st Tuesday Monthly, 6:30-8:45pm

Explore, celebrate, and deepen your experience of what it means to be a provider, father, and man. We’ll deal with life purpose, mission, and work/life balance in the company of other aware men and contemplate what’s most important. LifeLeaders’
Coach & Founder of Rockland Men’s Circle, Tom Kelley, leads this important Healthy Living program for men, which coincides with Men’s Health Week (6/11-6/17).


 

~Learn @ Your Library Lecture Series~

Defensive Driving
Mondays, 4/16 & 4/23: 5:30-8:30pm
Reduce the liability and collision premiums on your car insurance or have four points taken off your record by taking this class, which is open to those with a valid NYS driver’s license. The fee, due at required PRIOR in-person registration, is $26 for GWL School District residents & $36 for non-residents. Refreshments served. If you’re late, you won’t be permitted entry. Attendance required for BOTH sessions
Fun and Easy Chinese Characters
Tuesday, 4/17: 6:30-8pm
Join local author and award-winning artist, Ping Xu Moroney, at this program, where you will learn to write Chinese characters. In her book, “Fun and Easy Chinese Characters,” which has recently been published, Ping teaches how Chinese characters can be fun and easy to learn and write! Young Adults (Grades 7 & up)
are also invited to attend.
Sterling Forest Gardens

Join popular historian, educator, and photographer, Donald "Doc" Bayne, at this program where he will discuss the history of the development of Sterling Forest

Gardens, a world-class botanical accomplishment that once thrived. Come learn about how the gardens began and the changes it had to undergo to hold the public’s interest. Doc is known for his dynamic and entertaining programs that bring history to life. Young Adults (Grades 7 & up) are also invited to attend. This program is sponsored by Donald “Doc” Bayne.

You’re Hired!—A Resume Workshop

You’ll benefit from this workshop with Linda Tresca, a Technical Writer, who focuses on the resume format that highlights your true skill sets, achievements, and qualifications. You’ll practice how to best communicate your skills during the job interview to get you HIRED!

Memorial Day Tribute: America’s Four-Legged Heroes

Thursday (5/31) 6:30-8:30 p.m.

Animal advocate and pet lover, Carolann Puzio discusses the war history of these four-legged heroes at this multi-media presentation. Topics covered will be the

important role that military and stray canines have as companions to the soldier’s tour of duty. Puzio is a Certified Therapy Dog Handler, whose interest in rescue

animals has sparked a passion for animal research outreach projects, which she presents at local venues, including the Greenwood Lake Public Library. Young

Adults (Grades 9 & up) are also invited to attend.

Our gardening series returns this spring with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Orange County’s Master Gardeners, who are back by popular demand! Don’t miss these great gardening programs!

Fruitful Containers

Thursday, 5/10; 6:30-8:30pm

For those with limited space, growing fruits and vegetables in containers is a wonderful option. Explore the very best plants for growing in containers with Cornell’s Master Gardeners at this fruitful gardening program!

Ground Covers

Tuesday, 5/29: 6:30-8:30pm

Join Cornell’s Master Gardeners at this gardening program that “covers” the many types of ground covers available, their benefits, growing requirements, and how to use them in the garden. You’ll be surprised to learn how many choices of ground covers are available!

 

 

~StudioTime Art Instruction Series~

StudioTime: Floral Painting

Wednesdays, 4/18 & 4/25: 12-3 p.m.

Learn the fine art of floral painting with award-winning artist, Gulsen Beasley, who

returns this spring to teach you how to paint a variety of flowers using oil paints at

this two-session workshop. Floral painting is one of the most adventurous & enjoyable of the fine arts! Supply List available at registration. Must attend BOTH sessions. Program sponsored by Gulsen Beasley.

StudioTime: Landscape Painting

Wednesdays, 5/2, 5/9, 5/23 & 5/30: 12-3 p.m.

Learn the essential skills required by a landscape painter with award-winning artist, Gad Nusinov. Three categories will be covered at this four-session workshop: site selection and composition, how to create an illusion of depth, and color. Attendance mandatory at ALL sessions. Join Chef John Moultrie as he prepares a gourmet breakfast menu from fine Bed & Breakfast establishments at this culinary program, where you’ll sample a variety of foods for the ultimate breakfast experience! Great Grillin’ Grub

Saturday,  6/9: 2-3:30 p.m.

Chef John Moultrie returns to share his great grilling recipes just in time for Father’s Day. You’ll learn that grilling is not only for meat, but, rather, for a wide variety of

foods! He’ll demonstrate how to achieve the maximum grilled flavor from your favorite foods at this program that will satisfy your taste buds! Happy Grillin’!

Young Adults (Ages 16 & up) can sign up on the Waiting List and can attend if the program doesn’t fill by 6/2.

 
  

~Creative Corner Craft Series~

Bathing Beauties Bird Bath Craft

Friday, 5/18: 6:30-8pm

Attract birds to your yard by adding a bird bath! Crafter Maria Jones shows you how easy it is to provide a water feature for feathered friends at this hands-on, crafting workshop! $5 nonrefundable supply fee due at required in-person registration. Young Adults (Ages 16 & up) can sign up on the Waiting List and can attend if the program doesn’t fill by 5/10.

 

 

~Music Makers Concert Series~
The Library will continue to offer music programs after the successful Fall 2011 debut of the “Thursday Nite Music Makers” concert series. We’ll showcase talented musical acts through our NEW “Music Makers Concert Series,” which will feature a variety of genres. Enjoy the Music!
Stories for the Journey
Sunday, 5/6: 1-2:30pm
“Stories for the Journey,” told by songstress, Vickie Russell, will touch your heart!
Enjoy Vickie’s trademark humor and spirited tale-ending twists as she weaves her stories through her original songs to move you through a full life’s journey all in a single afternoon! FAMILY program - children must be accompanied by an adult. This project is made possible, in part, with individual donations from members of the community.
Your Favorites from the American Songbook

Sunday (6/3) 1:30-2:30pm

Join singer, Leigh Jonaitis, and musician, Larry Newcomb, at this concert featuring your favorites from the American Songbook, which showcase Leigh’s vocal stylings and Larry’s guitar mastery—a perfect match that is “Greenwood Lake Jazz!” FAMILY program - children must be accompanied by an adult. This project is made possible, in part, with individual donations from members of the community. 

Donations for this concert series are most welcome and can be made to the “Music Makers Concert Series” Project. As always, your generous support of Library projects is truly appreciated.


 

  ~Titanic 100th Anniversary Commemorative Programming~

The Greenwood Lake Public Library presents commemorative programming,

beginning with a film festival & ending with a historical lecture/performance,

for the 100th Anniversary of the April 15th, 1912, sinking of the Titanic.

Titanic Film Festival

All of the following programs are ADULT programs. However, Young Adults

(Grades 7 & up) are also invited to attend. Movie fare will be served.

A Night to Remember

Thursday, 4/19: 6:30-9pm
A film directed by Roy Ward Baker, based on the book by Walter Lord. After striking an iceberg, the Titanic sank, taking with it 1,500 of its 2,200 passengers. This film depicts this luxurious ship’s final hours!

Titanic: How It Really Sank

Sunday, 4/22: 12-1pm
A film by National Geographic. Was the sinking of the Titanic a tragedy that could have been prevented? After the wreck’s discovery in 1985, National Geographic explores new evidence for answers.

Titanic (1953)

Sunday, 4/22: 1-3pm
A film directed by Jean Negulesco (Academy Award Winning Film, 1953), starring Clifton Webb, Barbara Stanwyck, and Audrey Dalton, that tells the story of Julia Sturges, who is determined to remove her family from the superficial, high society world in which her husband is engrossed. After she and her two children board the Titanic, her husband buys a steerage ticket. Then, fate steps in and they face the unbearable!

 


 ~Performance Showcase~

Titanic: Love, Life & Loss

Saturday, 5/12: 1-2:30pm

Join Titanic Historian, Denise Vanaria, at this historical lecture/performance, who takes you back in time with Helen “Nellie” Andrews, as she recounts her early life in Victorian society and later when she meets and marries Thomas Andrews, Jr., the Titanic’s Chief Designer. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, and you’ll celebrate a life of accomplishments, promises, and dreams, and finally experience the ultimate tragedy!

Denise appears in authentic Edwardian wardrobe. Guests are also encouraged to dress in Titanic theme. This program is sponsored, in part, by The Friends of the Greenwood Lake Public Library.

~Works of Art Gallery~

     Questions about The Works of Art Gallery should be directed to Kelly Corrado, Ext. 108 or kcorrado@rcls.org.
     Our Works of Art Gallery has met with tremendous success. It is listed under Galleries in the Times Herald Record on Saturdays, has been featured in the New Jersey edition of the New York Times and often appears in the Delaware & Hudson Canvas as well as other arts papers.
     The Works of Art Gallery features a local artist’s work each month. This provides our local artists with an opportunity not only to shine, but to promote their work and network with fellow artists. Each year, we host an Art Extravaganza at which the previous year’s artists all have an opportunity to display some pieces of their work together. Occasionally, if we have an open time frame, we display other local artists outside of Greenwood Lake as well.

Mask Project

Jennifer Jones’ Global Studies students at George F. Baker High School will exhibit the unique masks they’ve created for their annual Mask Project from 4/6-4/29.

The Next Stop is …Rail Lines and Stations of Orange County

This exhibit, courtesy of the Orange County Citizens Foundation and Cultural Affairs at SUNY Orange, showcases the County’s history of rail lines and train stations, which helped develop this unique region.

 

 

~The Collectible Series~

     The Collectible Series features local collectors and their treasures. These collections are on display at the library on a rotating basis, with new collections exhibited every two weeks in the Kool Kids Kollectibles, Terrific Teens Treasures, Awesome Adults Acquirements and Sensational Seniors Selections. Happily, we have an entire line-up of collectors waiting to display their unique treasures in the coming months.
