Our Computer Area has 7 public access computers, which have unfiltered access to the Internet. Installed on these computers, we have word processing, spreadsheet and desktop publishing programs as well as many educational/fun CD ROM programs. Periodically, we offer Computer Classes, such as Introduction to Computers, Introduction to the Internet, Introduction to Word, Introduction to Excel, Introduction to PowerPoint and Introduction to Access.

Our Reference and Outgoing Computer Book/CD ROM collections are also located in the Computer Area of the library.

For full details on our computer policy, see the Computer Policy section of the Policies manual, located on our Policies page.

FYI

You will also find 2 public access computers in our Reference area. These computers do not have Internet access, but do have word processing, spreadsheet and desktop publishing programs. The computers in our Reference Area may only be used for schoolwork or personal work and are not meant for entertainment. In the Youth Study Center, we have 3 more public access computers, which are designated for use by students in Grades 5 and up. These computers do not have Internet access, but do have word processing, spreadsheet and desktop publishing programs as well as many educational/fun CD ROM programs. Lastly, we have 2 public access ANSER computers just past the Circulation Desk and 1 public access ANSER computer in our Reference area; these computers can be used to search the library catalog, access your personal record, place holds and renew library materials.

All of our computers are linked to printers. It is 10¢ per page to print in Black & White and 50¢ per page to print in Color. For students printing schoolwork, Black & White copies are free and the first 7 copies in Color are free.

Computer-Wise

Please be aware that although we have computers available for public access and encourage you to take advantage of them, a certain amount of computer knowledge on your part is necessary. While our staff will gladly assist you in finding the program you need and getting you started, you must be able to use the program on your own. In terms of general Internet usage (e-mail, general browsing, etc.), again a staff member will be happy to get you started, but you will need to be able to continue on your own.

We do not have staff available for individual computer lessons or to type letters, create resumes, cards, invitations or brochures. You are, however, more than welcome to bring someone with you who does know how to do these things and together you can create or do whatever you need.

A scanner is also available to you if needed. However, you must call ahead to be sure that there is a knowledgeable staff member available to scan the items for you. If you need to save your scanned items (or anything else), you must save them to a 1.44MB diskette (you may bring in one of your own or purchase one at the library for a $1.00) or a flash drive (you may bring in one of your own or purchase a 256MB one at the library for $11.00).

Also, we do not normally allow patrons to install their own programs. However, if you have a special need, please speak with Breanne Tempe, Joan Carvajal or Stephanie Thiel.

All children under the age of eighteen must have a parental permission slip on file at the library in order to use the computers The Internet is not filtered and there are special rules governing the use of the Internet by children. Parents must come in person to fill this permission slip out. Again, for full details on our computer policy, see the Computer Policy section of the Policy Manual, located on our Policies page.

As always, we hope that you will make use of the technology that your library has to offer, and if you or your children need help with Internet reference research, we will be very happy to assist you or, if necessary, access it for your children for school projects if you are unavailable to accompany them to the library.
